The Great Debate

Well after nearly killing a couple of customers I think it is time to start a series of informal lectures on Digital Photography 101. Please mail me if i have any wrong info or you disagree with me.
We will start with the basics and then move on to the more advanced topics as well go along.
First off cropping, the infamous 3x2 format and the dreaded RAW format.
Okay since everybody is a Photoshop expert these days I presume you know how to do a crop in photoshop. And everybody is cropping ! BUT ! How the hell do you expect me to print a photo that you have cropped square onto a normal photo ? And NO I cannot print square photo’s. When you do a crop please keep it in the 3x2 format so that it fits onto one of the preset sizes. So the same amount of space that you cut off on either the left or right side of the photo MUST be taken off at the top or bottom as well. To illustrate this open a file in photoshop. At the top after selecting the cutting tool fill in a value of 10 cm by 15 cm. When you try and do a crop on your photo you will see that you CANNOT do a free flow crop but are restricted to a 3x2 format. And the reason for that is so that your photo fits perfectly on the paper that it is printed on. And the preset sizes is available on our price list.
RAW format.
DONT bring me your digital files in RAW format ! I will open them, convert them to JPEG with a 50% compression and then print them. You have been warned ! RAW Format is for when you want to alter the F-Stop etc on the image file since the camera saved the “raw” data that came in through the lens. So do your alterations and conversions etc at home and bring me the finished product. Also don’t be a smart ass and bring me your 550 MB files which you “worked” on to try and impress me and then wanting Jumbo prints. It takes time to open these files and slows down everything. JPEG, 50% compression and then i print them. For normal Jumbo prints up to A3 the file size can be 1-5 MB and the prints will be fine.
Next we will cover color calibration which will be a whole topic on its own
Please mail me if you need any additional information or mail me.
